John McDonough


John McDonough has over twenty years experience in private practice and was a director and shareholder of another firm of patent attorneys before joining Hepworth Browne. John is qualified both as a patent attorney and trade mark attorney.

On the patents side John has extensive experience in patent drafting and prosecution, particularly in the fields of electronics, mechanical engineering, semiconductor devices and software. In relation to trade marks John has a significant trade marks practice relating to both prosecution and enforcement of trade mark registrations.

John is involved in the training of patent attorneys and paralegals on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and currently teaches a course in Intellectual Property Law on behalf of the University of York.

Before joining the profession John was a research fellow at the University of Cambridge and the Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble. John has a degree in physics and a PhD in solid state physics and has a further degree in computing.
